Fatal Chula Vista fire death of Amanda Buchanan – Obituary
Authorities have confirmed the death of Amanda Buchanan, 44, who passed away Thursday at a hospital from severe injuries sustained in a fire at a South Bay convenience store. The fire, suspected to be arson, was allegedly set by an ex-boyfriend at the 7-Eleven located in the 800 block of Broadway in Chula Vista.
The blaze broke out early Saturday morning, and patrol officers arriving at the scene found the store engulfed in smoke. Buchanan, who was critically injured, was discovered inside the building and rescued by the officers. She was then transported to a trauma center along with another employee who also suffered injuries but is reported to be in stable condition.
Police have indicated that the fire was deliberately set. A man, believed to have used gasoline to ignite the blaze, was seen fleeing the scene.
This man, identified as 47-year-old Jose Carlos Villanueva from Chula Vista, was apprehended later at a gas station in Redlands, San Bernardino County.
Investigators are looking into the motives behind the attack, noting that Buchanan and Villanueva had a prior relationship.
