Iowa State Patrol has named the teenage passenger who perished in an accident in downtown Des Moines early Wednesday morning. The deceased has been identified as 16-year-old Chad Nicholson of Des Moines, who was not wearing a seat belt during the collision.
According to the agency, a state trooper attempted to pull over a speeding Hyundai on Interstate 235 near Keo Way around 1 a.m. Wednesday. The 16-year-old driver of the Hyundai ignored the trooper’s signals, exited the interstate at 31st Street, and continued driving east on Grand Avenue.
As the trooper reduced speed, the Hyundai sped away on the wrong side of Grand Avenue. The fleeing vehicle later collided with another car at the intersection of Grand Avenue and 7th Street.
Des Moines police and fire personnel assisted the Iowa State Patrol in responding to the crash. At the scene, both vehicles ended up off the road, stopping on the south side of Grand Avenue. One of the vehicles struck and damaged the Ruan Center.
The Hyundai contained five occupants at the time of the accident. Nicholson was declared dead at the scene, while the driver and three passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe. Three of the injured were under 18 and were not wearing seat belts.
“This morning’s events are truly tragic. Losing a life in a car crash is always devastating,” said Sgt. Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol.
The Iowa State Patrol also noted that the driver of the Hyundai had outstanding warrants at the time of the crash.
A second, less severe accident occurred near the original crash site shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, with no confirmed injuries reported.
