An inquest in New South Wales has concluded that Corey Selby, who was fatally shot by police in Tenterfield in 2023, had wished for his own death at their hands. Deputy state coroner Carmel Forbes delivered her findings today regarding the death of Mr. Selby.
The 48-year-old was killed by police outside the Tenterfield Police Station in May of the previous year after approaching officers with what they believed to be a rifle. The inquest revealed that Mr. Selby struggled with long-standing mental health issues, endured chronic pain, and had been consuming alcohol on the day of his death.
Cindy Selby, his wife, had informed a triple-0 operator that Mr. Selby wanted police to arrive so he could appear to threaten them with his air rifle, hoping they would shoot him.
Describing the incident as “tragic,” Magistrate Forbes noted Mr. Selby’s difficult early life, including abuse from an alcoholic father. She also highlighted Mr. Selby’s mental health challenges, including depression and past threats of self-harm.
Magistrate Forbes shared details about Mr. Selby’s family life, with his wife referring to him as “her soul mate,” and stated that the family is now facing the challenge of moving forward without him.
She clarified that Mr. Selby had no intention to harm his family or the police and that the air rifle he held was not loaded. His actions were seen as impulsive, influenced by his pain, alcohol use, and depression.
The inquest also reviewed Mr. Selby’s mental health treatment history, noting that he had been scheduled for involuntary treatment at Tenterfield Hospital in October 2022 but was later admitted voluntarily to Armidale Hospital and discharged in early November 2022.
Magistrate Forbes found that hospital procedures were generally followed correctly, with only an “individual practitioner error” noted.
Cindy Selby called for improved mental health support in rural and regional areas, expressing that Corey’s death could lead to positive change if it prompts better care for mental health issues in such communities.
She concluded with a heartfelt message of love for her late husband.
