In Sao Paulo, Brazil, over 40 families of the victims from a tragic plane crash gathered at a morgue and nearby hotels on Sunday as three French investigators arrived to aid in the investigation. Forensic teams were busy identifying the remains of the 62 people who lost their lives.
The Sao Paulo state government reported that the plane’s two engines were extracted from the crash site on Sunday evening, more than two days after the incident. The remaining wreckage had already been cleared.
The crash, which occurred on Friday in Vinhedo, approximately 78 kilometers (49 miles) north of Sao Paulo, involved an ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop operated by Brazilian airline Voepass. The aircraft, en route to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo, carried 58 passengers and four crew members. Voepass indicated that three passengers who had Brazilian identification also held Venezuelan documents, and one possessed Portuguese identity.
ATR, a French-Italian company, has its aircraft investigated by the country of origin’s authorities in case of a crash. The three French investigators currently in Brazil are affiliated with BEA, the French civil aviation safety body.
The pilot, Danilo Santos Romano, and his co-pilot, Humberto de Campos Alencar e Silva, were among the first to be identified. Since then, authorities have identified another 10 victims. One body is already scheduled for burial, with an additional seven expected to follow on Sunday, according to Sao Paulo’s state government.
Voepass reported that Romano had completed his first full year as a commander. He joined the airline in November 2022 as a co-pilot and had accumulated 5,202 flying hours, all in ATR model planes, which is the only type the airline operates.
