Fatal Clairemont crash death of Edgar Giovanny Oviedo – Obituary
The teenager who perished in a Clairemont crash that resulted in the death of a San Diego police officer and left another critically injured did not possess a driver’s license, as revealed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, aged 16, only held an identification card, which does not authorize vehicle operation.
Records show Oviedo had no previous incidents related to collisions, convictions, or license issues. It remains unclear if this incident was his first time driving.
The tragic multi-vehicle accident took place around 11:30 p.m. Monday following a high-speed chase on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The pursuit began when Oviedo’s vehicle was spotted speeding. Attempts by nearby patrols to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful.
The chase was halted by supervising officers before the suspect vehicle crashed into the side of a patrol car with two officers aboard. Several other civilian cars were also involved in the collision.
30-year-old Officer Austin Machitar was pronounced dead at the scene, while his partner, 27-year-old Officer Zachary Martinez, was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.
Oviedo also died in the hospital, according to officials. There were no other reported injuries.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the accident.
