Toronto police have identified Ioannis Kyriakopoulos, a 64-year-old resident of Toronto, as the victim of a deadly shooting in Scarborough’s Oakridge neighborhood late Friday night. Emergency services were dispatched to Landry Avenue, near Danforth Avenue and Danforth Road, at approximately 11:25 p.m. following reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found Kyriakopoulos injured in front of a residence. Despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead at the scene.
Detective Sergeant Aaron Akeson stated that the investigation is still in its early stages. “We have identified at least three suspects who fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV,” he mentioned. “We are asking anyone who may have witnessed or heard anything to come forward with information, as even small details could be crucial to our investigation.”
The detective added that the response from officers was swift, arriving within two minutes of the call, but Kyriakopoulos could not be saved. “He was a father and husband, and his death has deeply affected many who were close to him. We are dedicating significant resources to uncover what happened and locate the suspects,” Akeson noted.
Despite challenging weather conditions, forensics teams worked diligently to preserve evidence. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but Akeson suspects it was targeted rather than random. Witnesses reported that two suspects were seen on foot before being joined by a third suspect who escaped in the SUV.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them. Kyriakopoulos’ death marks the 56th homicide in Toronto this year.
