Fatal Lancaster pedestrian crash death of John Zimmerman – Obituary
John Zimmerman, 72, originally from Lititz but recently residing in Lancaster, lost his life after being struck by a vehicle early on the morning of August 30. The incident occurred near the Fairfield Inn at 2270 Lincoln Highway East, around 4:10 a.m., as reported by the Lancaster County Coroner. Despite efforts, Zimmerman was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:54 a.m.
Authorities confirmed that Zimmerman was already deceased by the time first responders arrived. He had been walking in the eastbound lanes and was not in a crosswalk when he was struck. The vehicle involved in the crash did not stop and fled the scene, according to East Lampeter Township Police.
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office reported that Zimmerman suffered “significant trauma,” and the cause of death was determined to be multiple traumatic injuries. Further investigation is underway to determine the manner of death.
The crash took place in an area close to several popular tourist destinations, including Dutch Wonderland and the Cartoon Network Hotel. The section of Lincoln Highway East between Millstream Road and Witmer Road was closed following the incident but was reopened around 7 a.m., according to PennDOT.
The East Lampeter Township Police are currently investigating the hit-and-run and are seeking any witnesses or individuals with information to contact them at (717) 291-4676.
