A man in New York has been charged with the murders of his ex-wife, Kelly Coppola, 50, and her boyfriend, Kenneth Polhman Jr., 53. The accused, Daniel Coppola, 50, allegedly shot the pair after instructing his 15-year-old daughter to leave the house and wait in his car.
The tragic event occurred on Wednesday in St. James, a hamlet in Long Island. According to Suffolk County prosecutors, Daniel Coppola meticulously planned the killings, going so far as to leave a typewritten note outlining his intentions. The note was discovered by police during a search of his residence. It even indicated plans to target the attorneys involved in his contentious divorce.
During his arraignment, Coppola pleaded not guilty, and his defense attorney, Jason Cohen, requested that Coppola be placed under suicide watch. Assistant District Attorney Eric Aboulafia revealed that Coppola texted his daughter shortly before midnight, instructing her to leave the house. Coppola then broke into the home by shooting through the front door’s lock and proceeded upstairs, where he fatally shot Kelly Coppola and Kenneth Polhman Jr.
After the shooting, Coppola drove his daughter to his own home, where he reportedly threatened to take his own life. The teenager called 911, and police arrived at Coppola’s residence. He was recorded on an officer’s body camera admitting to the murders. In addition to the note, police also found a semiautomatic pistol in Coppola’s home.
Coppola allegedly blamed his financial troubles on his ex-wife, attempting to rationalize his actions. The note he left behind reportedly stated that he had “a bullet with the names of each of the attorneys involved in the case,” including one for his own lawyer. The letter also indicated that Coppola was fully aware of his actions, stating, “I am of sound mind and I know exactly what I am going to do.”
This incident has shocked the local community, leaving many grappling with the tragic loss of two lives.
