Fatal East Earl Township buggy crash death of Levi R. Stoltzfus – Obituary

On Wednesday, August 28, East Earl Township reported that an accident involving Levi R. Stoltzfus, 81, of Narvon, led to his death. Stoltzfus was traveling eastbound in his horse and buggy at the intersection of Sheep Hill Road and Springville Road when he failed to observe a stop sign on Springville Road, according to police.

 

A 44-year-old woman from New Holland was driving a BMW X5 SUV north on Springville Road when her vehicle struck the rear right wheel of Stoltzfus’s buggy as it entered the intersection. This collision caused the buggy to overturn. The incident occurred at approximately 8:13 p.m. on Sunday, August 25.

 

Both Stoltzfus and his 78-year-old wife were thrown from the buggy. Stoltzfus was pronounced dead at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital at 10:24 p.m. that evening. His wife was also hospitalized with serious injuries but is expected to recover fully. The Lancaster County Coroner’s office confirmed that Stoltzfus’s death was due to multiple traumatic injuries and deemed the incident an accident.

 

The BMW driver and her 13-year-old passenger were unharmed. The horse involved in the crash sustained minor injuries but is anticipated to fully recover. Levi and his wife, married for 57 years, are survived by their seven children, 51 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, as well as a brother and three sisters, as noted in his obituary on the Furman Funeral Home website.

 

The East Earl Township Police Department received assistance from various agencies at the scene, including Garden Spot Fire Rescue, New Holland Ambulance Association, Wellspan Ephrata Community Medics, Keystone Valley Fire Department Ambulance (Chester County), the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, the Lancaster County Crash Team (Reconstruction), and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
