Fatal French Township campfire explosion death of Marvin Theisen – Obituary
A tragic campfire explosion in French Township has resulted in the death of Marvin Theisen, 53, from Hibbing, and injuries to seven other individuals.
The incident occurred on Friday evening around 8:20 p.m., when a fire unexpectedly exploded during a holiday weekend gathering.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders arrived at the scene on Jaranson Road, approximately 20 miles north of Hibbing, to find that three people had been burned by the fire.
The explosion was caused by an unknown flammable liquid used to ignite the campfire.
The explosion inflicted burn and inhalation injuries on eight people, ranging in age from 14 to over 60.
The most severely injured, a 14-year-old girl from Saginaw, was airlifted to a hospital in Minneapolis.
The remaining injured individuals were taken to local hospitals either by ambulance or private vehicles.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office are continuing to investigate the accident. Assistance was provided by the French Township Fire Department, EMS, Chisholm ambulance, Hibbing ambulance, Life Link III, and Guardian Flight.
