Fatal Ft. Gibson Lake drowning death of Pedro Ramirez-Anaya – Obituary
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has reported two tragic drownings that occurred on Friday at Ft. Gibson Lake and Lake Texoma. The first incident took place around 3:20 p.m. when 70-year-old Pedro Ramirez-Anaya of Tulsa was swimming with his wife at Ft. Gibson Lake. His wife noticed something was wrong when Ramirez-Anaya appeared to have a strange expression on his face as they swam towards a nearby island. Concerned, she asked if he was alright but received no verbal response; instead, Ramirez-Anaya gestured towards his chest.
Officials reported that Ramirez-Anaya lost consciousness and slipped beneath the water. His wife tried to keep him afloat until two passersby offered their assistance. The Taylor’s Ferry Fire Department initiated a boat rescue and recovered Ramirez-Anaya’s body.
Later that afternoon, at approximately 5 p.m., 41-year-old Allyson Byron from Bryan County was floating on her back about 20 feet south of the shore at Lake Texoma when she unexpectedly submerged and did not resurface. According to authorities, Byron was found in three feet of water and was rushed to Alliance Health in Durant, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Neither of the victims were wearing life jackets at the time of the incidents. With the upcoming Labor Day weekend, officials urge those planning to visit lakes or swim in any body of water to prioritize safety by wearing properly fitted life jackets and ensuring they are never alone, always accompanied by a friend or family member.
