A retired vicar and his wife have been identified as the two pedestrians who lost their lives in a tragic accident in the coastal town of Beaumaris, North Wales.

Reverend Stephen Burch and his wife Katherine, both aged 65 and residents of Alcester, Warwickshire, were struck and killed by a grey Audi A8 on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for North Wales Police. The driver of the Audi, an 81-year-old man, also died at the scene.

The Diocese of Coventry expressed their shock at the news, noting Reverend Burch’s recent retirement after more than 35 years of service. He had spent the last 19 years as the vicar of St James in Fletchamstead. “Steve was a beloved member of our community, known for his humor and steadfast faith. Many also knew Kathy from her work with the Church Pastoral Aid Society and her involvement in worship ministry,” the diocese said in a statement.

The couple had remained active in their retirement, continuing their ministry by running an Alpha course that led to baptisms and confirmations earlier this year.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve and Kathy’s family, especially their children David, Jonathan, and Sarah, as they cope with this devastating and unexpected loss,” the diocese added.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, expressing their gratitude for the support and prayers they have received.

A tribute shared through the police included a prayer for the grieving family: “Dear Lord, as Jesus’ followers asked him to help their friends, so we ask you today to help our friends struggling in the darkness of grief. May they find peace, joy in their memories, and hope in your love.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Sergeant Emlyn Hughes, from the serious collision investigation unit, thanked those who have come forward with information, CCTV, and dashcam footage. “We appreciate the community’s support during this challenging time as we work to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident,” he said.

A witness at the scene described hearing a “loud bang” from a nearby hotel and seeing people urgently trying to administer CPR. “Everyone came together, diverting traffic and doing their best to provide dignity to those involved, but it was a truly horrific scene,” she said.

She also noted that Beaumaris, typically bustling with tourists, had been deeply affected by the tragedy. “It’s such a beautiful place, and this has left everyone in shock,” she added.
