Robert Bachor, a 56-year-old resident of East Washington Street, was identified as the victim of a fatal collision in Shenango Township on Friday evening.
According to Lawrence County Coroner Richard “R.J.” Johnson and Shenango Area Fire District Chief David Rishel, Bachor was driving a Toyota SUV westbound on Route 422 near the Eldorado Motel around 6:55 p.m. when his vehicle veered into the eastbound lane, crashing head-on into a Lincoln SUV driven by Vincent Menichino, 62, of Shenango Township.
Menichino sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to St. Elizabeth’s Youngstown Hospital. His condition remained unknown as of Sunday.
Bachor’s vehicle had also sideswiped another eastbound car operated by Cathy Filer of New Castle, who, along with her passenger, escaped unscathed.
Chief Rishel reported that a surveillance video from the Eldorado Motel showed the violent nature of the crash.
The collision caused Bachor’s vehicle to lift off the ground, while both vehicles came to a sudden stop. Despite the severe impact, there was no evidence of excessive speed, according to Rishel.
A nurse at the scene promptly notified emergency responders of the fatality and the serious injuries sustained by Menichino. Firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to extract Menichino from the wreckage. The extraction and transport to the helicopter took place within 20 minutes, a critical factor due to the severity of his injuries.
Route 422 was closed from approximately 6:55 p.m. to nearly 10 p.m. between Hoover and Aiken roads for cleanup and investigation.
The Shenango Township police are investigating the accident, with Cpl. Dave Lough noting that initial reports suggest Bachor may have lost consciousness prior to the collision.
The Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department, Shenango Township police, Noga Ambulance, and McGonigle ambulance companies assisted at the scene.
