FREDERICTON — The son of Darrell Mesheau, a 78-year-old who passed away after waiting nearly seven hours in an emergency department, has accused New Brunswick’s premier of exploiting his father’s death for political advantage.
Ryan Mesheau expressed his dismay over Premier Blaine Higgs’s recent commitment to protect healthcare workers from legal repercussions, which was made in response to a lawsuit filed by the Mesheau family.
This lawsuit claims that Darrell Mesheau’s death resulted from substandard care.
Ryan Mesheau criticized Higgs, saying in a statement that the premier’s actions appeared to be a self-serving attempt to gain political leverage rather than addressing the real issues at hand.
He urged Higgs to earn political support through genuine efforts rather than manipulating the situation for personal gain.
Darrell Mesheau was transported to Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital by ambulance on July 11, 2022.
Seven hours later, a nurse discovered him unresponsive and slumped in his wheelchair.
This incident led to significant public outrage and increased scrutiny of the province’s healthcare system.
In response to Mesheau’s death, Higgs had deemed the situation “simply unacceptable” and subsequently replaced both the health minister and the head of Horizon Health Network, which manages the province’s anglophone hospitals. A coroner’s inquest conducted in April concluded that Mesheau’s death was due to heart failure.
The Mesheau family filed a lawsuit in July, accusing Horizon Health and two nurses, Danielle Othen and April Knowles, of “reckless and outrageous acts and omissions” that contributed to Mesheau’s death. This lawsuit, which is pending in New Brunswick’s Court of King’s Bench, has not yet been tested in court.
Kris McDavid, a spokesperson for Horizon Health, stated via email that the health authority would not be providing interviews regarding the lawsuit or commenting on the nurses named in it.
