On August 30, 2024, officials released the causes of death and identities of the individuals involved in a tragic incident on the Piscataqua River Bridge. The situation, which began in New Hampshire and concluded in Maine, has been thoroughly investigated.
Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, confirmed that the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Augusta conducted autopsies on the victims. Trent Weston, a 37-year-old from Troy, New Hampshire, was identified as the deceased adult male. The cause of death for Weston was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds, ruled a homicide due to an officer-involved shooting. His 8-year-old son, Benson Weston, also of Troy, was found to have died from similar injuries, with his death likewise classified as a homicide.
The Chief Medical Officer in New Hampshire performed the autopsy on Brittany Weston, Trent’s wife, also 37, and determined she died from multiple gunshot wounds, with her death also ruled a homicide.
The investigation is ongoing regarding the events leading up to the standoff on August 29, 2024. Authorities are trying to piece together what led to Weston’s confrontation with police on the Piscataqua River Bridge, where his son’s body was found in the back seat of his vehicle.
During the standoff, officers from both Maine and New Hampshire fired at Weston after he exited his vehicle and aimed a gun at them. The involved officers are currently on administrative leave while the Maine Attorney General’s Office reviews the use of deadly force.
