Wayne Noel, a 64-year-old resident of Queens, died in a high-impact collision on Friday while fleeing from police. The crash occurred after Noel, who was a suspect in the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 9-year-old girl, tried to evade capture.
According to NYPD officials, police had attempted to stop Noel’s vehicle after linking it to the abduction of the young girl from a Key Foods grocery store in Queens Village. The driver refused to pull over, accelerating rapidly before crashing into an SUV. The impact of the collision was described by witnesses at the scene as loud and severe.
Witnesses reported that police officers had shouted commands at Noel to show his hands and tried to extract him from the car before it collided with the SUV. Surveillance footage showed Noel’s silver Honda Civic speeding through an intersection before the crash. Police arrived moments later and rushed to the vehicle.
Noel was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Authorities confirmed that Noel was the individual sought in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault of the girl.
NYPD officials revealed that Noel had a criminal record with four prior arrests, including a recent robbery in 2022 involving the same vehicle he used on Thursday night.
In the crash, one occupant of the SUV sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while no pedestrians were affected. The crash occurred less than a day after the abduction incident.
Officials described the abduction, stating that the girl was with her grandmother at the grocery store around 7 p.m. When the grandmother briefly left the store, Noel, who was already present, allegedly grabbed the girl by her hair and forced her outside. He then drove to a nearby location where he sexually assaulted the child. The assault was interrupted by a bystander, causing Noel to flee and later repark near the store.
