Matthew Gaudreau, a 29-year-old who was set to become a father, tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Oldmans. The incident occurred when he and his older brother, Johnny Gaudreau, were struck by a suspected drunk driver on Thursday night. Johnny Gaudreau, a player for the Columbus Blue Jackets, was 31 years old.
Johnny’s wife, Meredith Gaudreau, expressed her sorrow on Instagram, describing her husband as “perfect” and affirming her undying love for him.
Similarly, Matthew’s wife, Madeline, shared that the brothers were each other’s strongest supporters. She also revealed that she and Matthew were eagerly anticipating the birth of their first child, whom they planned to name Tripp.
Sean Higgins, the 43-year-old accused drunk driver, is currently in custody at Salem County Jail. He has been charged with two counts of death by auto. Reports indicate that Higgins admitted to consuming several beers before the fatal accident.
He is employed at a rehab facility in Bristol, Pennsylvania, where he has been placed on leave due to the charges. Higgins has also served in the New Jersey Army National Guard, where he was promoted to major in 2019.
A GoFundMe campaign for Madeline Gaudreau and her unborn child has raised over $460,000. Supporters, including hockey fans and Boston College alumni, have contributed generously to help alleviate the family’s financial burdens during this difficult time.
The Gaudreau brothers were well-regarded figures in their community and their loss is deeply felt by many.
