Fatal southwest Houston carjacking death of Nelson Beckett – Obituary.
A 90-year-old veteran named Nelson Beckett was tragically shot and killed during a carjacking incident outside a retirement community in southwest Houston.
The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of Lonestar Living on Westbrae Parkway. According to authorities, a man in his late 20s approached Beckett, engaged him in conversation, and then suddenly attacked him. Surveillance footage reveals that the assailant shot Beckett before taking his car.
As the suspect fled the scene, he reportedly ran over Beckett, who later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Beckett’s vehicle was later discovered abandoned at an apartment complex less than three miles from the crime scene.
Nelson Beckett’s son, Tim Beckett, shared that his father leaves behind a family that includes two children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Nelson had attended Abilene Christian University and served in the Navy, though he did not see combat. After his military service, he pursued a career in sales and was an active member of Southwest Central Church of Christ, where he once served as an elder.
The church addressed the tragic loss of Beckett during their Sunday service, with senior minister Steve Sargent describing the act as senseless and brutal, especially against someone as gentle as Beckett.
