Family and friends of Ricardo “Ricky” Resendez Jr., a 28-year-old man who died in a crash last Saturday, gathered for a vigil on Saturday night to demand justice. The gathering took place in the Second Ward, the neighborhood where Resendez lived.
Resendez was returning home from his job at the airport around 1:30 p.m. when Rigo Vivar, driving his Chevy Tahoe the wrong way on Canal Street, struck him as he turned onto North Live Oak Street. Resendez, who was only a block from his home, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Vivar, who was identified as a former Precinct 6 deputy, was off-duty and driving his personal vehicle at the time. He has since been dismissed from his position. No charges have been filed against him yet, but Resendez’s family remains hopeful for legal action.
Brenda Resendez, the victim’s sister, expressed frustration, stating, “Every day without answers makes it harder for us. We hope that HPD and those involved in the investigation are doing everything they can.”
At the vigil, approximately 50 people came together to honor Resendez’s memory and demand “Justice for Ricky.” His aunt lamented that “He should still be here.”
Blanca Estela Marquez, Resendez’s mother, thanked the community for their support and emphasized the need for accountability. “We want to prevent this from happening to others. Everyone deserves to return home safely,” she said.
In an emotional interview, Vivar apologized to the Resendez family, expressing his sorrow over the incident.
