The 19-year-old college student who fell overboard from the world’s largest cruise ship has been identified as Sigmund Ropich. His sister, Savannah Ropich, confirmed his identity and stated that she has been in touch with the US Embassy in Cuba.
According to Royal Caribbean, Mr. Ropich went overboard from the Wonder of the Seas just before 9 pm on August 29, during the second day of a seven-day voyage from Port Canaveral in Florida to the Grand Cayman Islands. Despite ongoing efforts, he has not been located nearly a week later.
Mr. Ropich was traveling on the cruise with his close friends, a co-worker, and the co-worker’s family at the time of the incident.
“Sig is a wonderful person. He never causes trouble and is highly intelligent, excelling in subjects like Calculus, Physics, and Government with ease. He’s a college student and also works. Sig is kind, reserved, and has a talent for making people laugh. I always describe him as the ‘Cool, Calm, and Collected’ sibling,” Ms. Ropich shared with Fox News.
Ms. Ropich reported that Cuban officials have ceased their search at sea and have shifted their efforts to the coastline and land. She expressed concern that the search might soon be terminated.
“We remain hopeful that the search will resume in the ocean. We need them to reopen it,” Ms. Ropich said to Insider.
The Ropich family has expressed frustration over the limited information they have received about the search. Royal Caribbean has not disclosed how long the ship’s crew searched for Mr. Ropich, according to his sister.
The family is continuously “praying hourly day and night” for his safe return.
Royal Caribbean has indicated it is collaborating with the US Coast Guard in the search. However, a spokesperson from the South Florida branch of the US Coast Guard stated that the Cuban Border Guard is leading the search since the incident occurred within Cuban territorial waters.
