A tragic accident in Southern California has left a family grieving after Vivian Chow was killed when a man leaped from a freeway bridge and landed on her vehicle.
On August 9, Vivian Chow, 59, from Ontario, was riding as a passenger while her husband drove along the 210 Freeway in Sylmar around 7 p.m. As they passed under the Roxford Street overpass, a man jumped from the bridge in a suicide attempt. His body crashed onto Vivian’s car, smashed through the windshield, and struck her directly.
Vivian was taken to the hospital and spent several weeks in the ICU before passing away on August 28. Her husband, Florencio Chow, emerged from the crash with minor injuries.
The incident has left Vivian’s family in deep shock and mourning. David Chow, her son, expressed his anguish, saying, “The way it all happened, it just wasn’t fair.” Stephanie Chow, her daughter, added, “I’m just sad and a little angry that was her destiny, her end.”
Florencio called for help immediately after the impact. David recalled, “Something landed on the vehicle, so my father pulled over onto the shoulder to try to get the guy off my mom.”
Though deeply pained, Florencio has said he harbors no anger towards the man who caused the tragedy. A prayer service was held at their home in Ontario on August 31, 2024, to honor Vivian.
Stephanie lamented, “She goes out for a trip and then she just never comes back. And that’s my anger. That we never said ‘Bye.’” David reflected on the void left by her absence, stating, “How are we going to fill that void?”
Vivian is survived by her husband, three adult children, and seven grandchildren. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family with funeral costs.
