Darean Davis, a 14-year-old student from Detroit, has been identified as the victim of a shooting at the Michigan State Fair on Saturday night. The incident occurred in a parking lot near Grand River Avenue at around 10 p.m., according to police.
Davis, who was a sophomore at University High School in Ferndale, was with another 14-year-old when they were shot.
They had traveled from Detroit to Farmington Hills by Uber and then continued to the fair, where they reportedly had an ongoing dispute with another group of teenagers.
The altercation escalated into violence, resulting in the shooting. Davis was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries, while the other teen is in stable condition.
Darean’s mother, Verteya Gilbert, has appealed for witnesses to come forward, stating that there were many people at the scene, and some may have recorded the incident. She hopes that any information could offer some solace during this difficult time.
The police are continuing their investigation and have requested anyone with information to contact the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100. They are reviewing social media footage to help identify the shooter, who fled the scene amid chaos.
Grief counselors will be available at Ferndale Public Schools on Tuesday to support students, staff, and parents, as noted in a letter from school officials. The letter urges the community to unite in support and remembrance of Darean.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing as authorities seek more details about the incident.
