Fatal Novi shooting claims the life of 14-year-old Darean Davis – Obituary
Gunfire erupted on Saturday in a parking lot southwest of the Michigan State Fair, causing panic among visitors and resulting in the death of 14-year-old Darean Davis and injuring another 14-year-old boy.
Darean Davis, a sophomore at University High School, was identified as the victim in a letter sent to parents across the district. Ferndale Schools Superintendent Camille Hibbler addressed the incident, noting, “It is our understanding that what happened at the State Fair on Saturday was an isolated incident. However, to ensure the safety of our students, we will be implementing additional security measures starting Tuesday. Students and families will also notice an increased presence of mental health support staff and police.”
Novi police are actively working to identify a suspect in the shooting, which they also believe to be an isolated event.
Initial reports from the scene around 10 p.m. had mistakenly suggested the presence of an active shooter in the parking lot near the Suburban Collection Showplace. However, Novi Police Commander Jason Meier clarified on Monday that the shooting likely occurred during a physical altercation involving a group of people. The confrontation may have escalated from an argument that had taken place earlier in the week in different communities.
Novi police also confirmed that the teens involved were from Detroit.
As of Monday, the injured teen remained hospitalized in stable condition.
