Fatal Brooklyn shooting death of Denzel Chan – Obituary
Denzel Chan, a 25-year-old from Texas, was fatally shot during the West Indian Day Parade in Crown Heights, Brooklyn on Monday.
Chan was struck in the abdomen when gunfire erupted near Franklin Avenue and Eastern Parkway around 2:30 p.m., as reported by law enforcement and the NYPD. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Chan could not be saved.
In addition to Chan, four others were injured in the incident. This included a 69-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy, and two men aged 36 and 64. The 36-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
Witnesses described the chaos, with one attendee noting, “I ducked and covered. There were two people lying on the ground, and one man had a wound in his head. I was close to death today.”
The shooting appears to have been targeted, though the motive remains unclear. Officials suspect gang involvement in the incident. The suspect, described as being in his 20s and wearing a bandana with a brown shirt, has not yet been apprehended.
The parade, attended by nearly a million people, has seen its share of violence in the past, but increased police presence in recent years has aimed to mitigate such incidents.
Mayor Eric Adams emphasized that crime would not deter future events, stating, “We don’t surrender to crime. We won’t stop the Thanksgiving parade if something happens.” He also noted that August has seen a historic low of 74 shootings in the city.
