The Mississippi Highway Patrol has named the seven victims of the devastating bus accident on Interstate 20 near Vicksburg that occurred early Saturday morning. All individuals were from Mexico.
The deceased include:
– Miguel Arriaga, aged 61
– Victor A. Garcia, aged 32
– Moises A. Garcia, aged 31
– Kain Gutierrez, aged 8
– Perla Gutierrez, aged 16
– Elia Guzman, aged 63
– Angelica Palomino, aged 16
The bus, operated by Autobuses Regiomontanos based in Laredo, Texas, with a location in Atlanta, was traveling from Atlanta to Dallas when the accident happened.
The crash took place at approximately 12:40 a.m. near Mile Marker 9 on I-20 westbound. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a failure of the left front tire on the 2018 Volvo bus led to the vehicle swerving off the highway and overturning on an embankment.
Six individuals were confirmed dead at the scene, while another passed away later at a hospital in Vicksburg.
The bus carried a total of 43 people, including 41 passengers and 2 drivers. The survivors were taken to medical facilities in Vicksburg and Jackson for treatment.
Emergency services from the Vicksburg Police and Fire Departments, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Warren County Fire Service, and Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the incident, assisting the injured and rescuing those trapped.
In response, local officials and organizations, including the Baptist Association, offered aid to the affected passengers, providing food and clothing.
The NTSB has sent a 17-member team to Vicksburg to investigate, with a preliminary report anticipated within 30 days.
