Fatal Clairemont Boulevard crash death of Edgar Giovanny Oviedo – Obituary
A roadside memorial, adorned with flowers, candles, and beer cans, was set up near the intersection of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Doliva Drive on Wednesday. The 16-year-old San Diego resident, identified as Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, led police on a brief chase before crashing into a patrol car, resulting in the death of Officer Austin Machitar and critically injuring his partner, Officer Zach Martinez.
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. Monday when Oviedo, driving a BMW sedan, was spotted speeding east on Clairemont Boulevard. San Diego police initiated a short pursuit, but the chase was soon terminated due to excessive speeds. As the BMW continued, it collided with a patrol car driven by Officer Machitar, causing the vehicle to burst into flames.
Officer Austin Machitar, 30, was killed in the crash. His colleague, Officer Zach Martinez, 27, was ejected from the vehicle and remains in critical condition, with no updates provided on his status. The medical examiner confirmed that Oviedo was pronounced dead at the hospital
According to Oviedo’s family, he was out to pick up food when the pursuit began. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision
By Thursday afternoon, over $144,000 had been raised through a fundraising campaign for the affected officers and their families.
Officer Machitar, a 5½-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, had graduated from Otay Ranch High School.
Officer Martinez, who has been with the department for 1½ years, also served at the Northern Division station in University City.
