Fatal El Dorado County climbing accident death of Janel Mathews – Obituary
A tragic incident occurred last week at a popular campground in El Dorado County, where 30-year-old Janel Mathews, an Ohio resident, fell to her death while climbing Lovers Leap.
The accident took place on the evening of August 29th, as Mathews was scaling the east face of the cliff with her climbing partner.
Emergency teams, including the El Dorado County Search and Rescue unit and a sheriff’s office helicopter, were deployed to assist in the recovery operation.
Despite her experience and proper climbing gear, Mathews succumbed to the injuries sustained in the fall, according to the sheriff’s office.
Mathews was known as an experienced climber, making the tragic accident all the more heartbreaking for those who knew her.
