Justin Robinson, identified as a violence interrupter, was shot and killed by D.C. police officers on Sunday morning. Robinson, 26, of Southeast D.C., was reportedly involved in an incident at a McDonald’s on Marion Barry Avenue SE.
Robinson was recognized as part of the Cure The Streets program with the D.C. Attorney General’s Office. The AG’s office declined to comment further on his involvement. Police Chief Pamela Smith stated that the shooting took place following a crash at the McDonald’s. Officers responded to the scene around 5:30 a.m. and found a vehicle had collided with the restaurant, causing damage.
According to Smith, Robinson, the vehicle’s driver, was found unresponsive inside the car with a gun on his lap. As officers requested backup, Robinson began to awaken and allegedly reached for an officer’s weapon. In response, two officers fired their guns, fatally wounding Robinson. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his weapon was recovered by police.
The incident will undergo an independent review. The involved officers, who were uninjured, are currently on administrative leave per department policy.
That evening, Robinson’s family and friends protested in Southeast D.C., demanding the release of body camera footage from the incident. The protest led to road closures, with demonstrators marching against traffic on Suitland Parkway.
