Fatal Plattsburgh shooting death of Markus Dixon – Obituary
In the early hours of the morning, a shooting on Cornelia Street resulted in the death of 31-year-old Markus Dixon.
The incident occurred around 2:20 a.m., leaving Dixon with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders treated him at the scene before transporting him to the University of Vermont Health Network’s Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities quickly identified and apprehended the suspects, Chazz Johnson, 24, and Erica Colon, 21, at a Route 9 motel in Beekmantown.
Johnson faces charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, while Colon is charged with conspiracy and weapon possession. Both were arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and remain in custody.
The shooting reportedly stemmed from a confrontation earlier in the evening between Dixon and Colon outside a downtown establishment. Johnson and Colon, who were found in possession of a firearm matching evidence from the crime scene, are believed to have been involved in the incident.
An autopsy for Dixon is scheduled at Glens Falls Hospital. Cornelia Street remains closed as a precaution, and the hospital’s lockdown has been lifted following the suspects’ capture. Local law enforcement’s rapid response has been praised by both authorities and the community.
