Fatal Rochester, NY assault claims the life of Melikah Bruner – Obituary
A Rochester woman, Melikah Bruner, was beaten to death in her home on Hazelwood Terrace in late August, and a man has been charged in connection with her death.
On the night of August 27th, a child at 296 Hazelwood Terrace called 911 around 11:30 p.m., reporting that Bruner’s boyfriend was attacking her, according to Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello. When officers arrived, they found the 43-year-old Bruner dead inside the residence.
The accused, 49-year-old Walter Balkum, has been charged with second-degree murder, a felony, for his alleged role in Bruner’s death.
A Monroe County grand jury is set to review the case and may consider additional charges.
Initially, it was believed that Bruner had been stabbed, but authorities later determined she had been beaten to death.
Balkum is accused of repeatedly striking Bruner in the head and upper body, which led to her death.
Balkum was apprehended on Monday at a home in Rochester and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday morning. It was revealed that Bruner had previously obtained a protective order against Balkum following an assault on June 2nd. Although he was released from custody, he was placed under electronic monitoring. However, the monitoring device was removed just five days before Bruner’s death after a court hearing in Monroe County Superior Court, Bello said.
Balkum is a convicted felon with a criminal history that includes four prior felony convictions and seven misdemeanor convictions. He has spent more than a decade in prison following a 2004 conviction for burglary and robbery, according to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
