Over the Labor Day Weekend, Minnesota experienced a series of tragic traffic accidents, resulting in the loss of five lives. This period, known by state safety officials as the “100 deadliest days on Minnesota roads,” has once again proven its grim reputation.

Among the fatalities were three motorcyclists, one of whom was involved in a hit-and-run that led to an arrest.

The first fatal incident occurred Saturday morning in Fillmore County, where 81-year-old Noel Alan Luedtke of Rochester died in a motorcycle accident.

Luedtke’s motorcycle veered off Hwy. 30, west of Rushford, and entered a ditch around 10:40 a.m., according to the State Patrol.

The second motorcycle fatality on Saturday took place in Minneapolis, on an exit ramp from eastbound I-94.

William Wade Lyons, 33, of Lakeville lost control of his bike and crashed into a sound wall around 6:20 p.m. He was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

In southwestern Minnesota’s Redwood County, a fatal crash occurred around 9:10 p.m. A news release from the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office reported that Richard Gewerth from rural Morton died after his pickup truck left the road and hit a utility pole. He was declared dead at the scene.

The third motorcycle accident of the weekend happened in Morrison County on Sunday. The State Patrol reported that a collision occurred between a motorcycle and an SUV on Highway 10 around 2:30 p.m.

The motorcycle’s rear tire struck the SUV, causing the motorcycle’s riders to be ejected and the SUV to roll over. David Searcy, 69, of Sauk Centre was killed, while his passenger, Ruth Ann Searcy, also 69, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The 17-year-old SUV driver was unhurt.

The final reported fatality was a hit-and-run in Minneapolis on Monday. A motorized bike rider was killed when struck by a speeding vehicle around 5:30 p.m.

The driver fled but was later apprehended. The victim’s name has not yet been released, and the suspect could face charges of criminal vehicular homicide.
