Fatal Forest Park shooting death of Simeon Bihesi – Obituary

In a tragic incident on Monday morning, four individuals lost their lives in a shooting aboard a CTA Blue Line train near Forest Park, a suburb of Chicago.

Among the victims was 28-year-old Simeon Bihesi, who was identified by authorities on Tuesday. The attack took place as the train approached the Forest Park terminal just before 5:30 a.m., according to Deputy Chief Christopher Chin of the Forest Park Police.

Three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth, who was taken to a nearby hospital, later succumbed to their injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office noted that, in addition to Bihesi, the deceased included a 52-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman.

Officials have suggested that the shooting was an isolated incident with no further threat to the public. The shooter, who appeared to have acted alone, did not seem to know the victims, who were reportedly asleep during the attack. Police also confirmed that there were no signs of a robbery attempt, indicating that the attack was random and without apparent motive.

Deputy Chief Chin expressed the shock and horror of the situation, particularly given that it occurred on Labor Day, a holiday meant for rest and family time. “It’s an unimaginable tragedy, especially on a day meant for relaxation,” Chin stated. “This is not the kind of news anyone wants to wake up to.”

The suspect was quickly apprehended thanks to surveillance footage. The individual was found on a CTA Pink Line train later that morning and was taken into custody. A weapon was also recovered during the arrest.

Due to the investigation, Blue Line service was temporarily halted between Forest Park and Austin, with shuttle buses provided for affected passengers. Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins remarked on the senselessness of the tragedy, calling it a “horrible event” on what should have been a peaceful holiday.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) expressed condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as a “heinous crime and tragedy.” The CTA reiterated its commitment to the safety of its passengers and staff, acknowledging the efforts of both the Forest Park and Chicago Police Departments in swiftly handling the situation.

This shooting also brings to light ongoing issues at the Forest Park station, which has seen a significant increase in emergency calls in recent years. Mayor Hoskins urged state lawmakers to consider allocating more resources to help manage safety and public health challenges in the area, which includes dealing with incidents ranging from mental health crises to drug overdoses.

Anyone with further information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the Forest Park Police Department.
