Authorities in Old Lyme, Connecticut, have recovered the bodies of two men who went missing after a boat accident that occurred four days ago. The boat, carrying nine people, collided with a jetty along the Connecticut shoreline.
State environmental conservation officers discovered the first body around noon in the Connecticut River’s mouth between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, approximately a quarter-mile from the crash site. The second body was located later in the afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
The identities of the deceased men have not been released pending notification of their families.
The crash resulted in the death of Christopher Hallahan, 34, from Westbrook, Connecticut. Six other passengers were injured and transported to a hospital. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday to find the 31-foot motorboat partially submerged and severely damaged near an Old Saybrook marina where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound. Authorities reported that the boat had struck a jetty, and the cause of the incident is under investigation.
The group was returning from a trip to Block Island, Rhode Island, and it was noted that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets.
The search operation, which involved divers, drones, aircraft, sonar, and remote-operated underwater vehicles, lasted for several days. This accident occurred near the site of another Labor Day boat crash in 2023, which also resulted in injuries. Environmental conservation officers have dismissed claims that the location is particularly dangerous.
