On Monday, authorities in Vermont reported they had discovered the crash site of a small plane that went missing the previous day and recovered the bodies of all four individuals on board. There were no survivors from the incident.
The Vermont State Police have identified the deceased as Paul Pelletier, 55, from Columbia, Connecticut; Frank Rodriquez, 88, from Lebanon, Connecticut; Susan Van Ness, 51, and Delilah Van Ness, 15, both from Middletown, Connecticut.
According to Middletown Public Schools, Paul Pelletier was an aerospace and manufacturing teacher at Middletown High School, where Delilah Van Ness was a sophomore. Susan Van Ness was Delilah’s mother.
Dr. Alberto Vázquez Matos, superintendent of Middletown Public Schools, expressed profound grief in a statement, noting the significant impact of the loss on the community. “Paul, Delilah, and Susan were cherished members of our district and their absence will be deeply felt,” he said.
The single-engine Piper aircraft was located in a wooded area east of Basin Harbor Airport after midnight. The plane had departed from Windham Airport in Connecticut around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and arrived at Basin Harbor Airport about two hours later. After brunch, the group left Basin Harbor at noon for their return flight to Connecticut. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the plane on the runway at Basin Harbor around 12:15 p.m. local time.
The aircraft’s distress was not reported, and it was only when relatives noted the plane’s failure to arrive in Connecticut that authorities were alerted, leading to the search.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash of the Piper PA-28R-180.
In response to the tragedy, Middletown High School will be closed on Tuesday, with all scheduled athletic events postponed. The school district has called for community support and solidarity during this difficult time, aiming to honor the legacies of Paul, Delilah, and Susan through their values of compassion and dedication.
