Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood has identified Russel Barnes, an 88-year-old Pekin resident, as the victim of a two-vehicle rollover crash that occurred on Tuesday.
Barnes, who was seated in the front passenger side of one of the vehicles, sustained severe blunt-force injuries to his chest and head. He was initially taken to OSF Healthcare St. Francis Medical Center in critical condition.
Barnes’s condition deteriorated at the hospital, and he passed away around 10 p.m. on Saturday. According to Harwood, Barnes was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Peoria Police Department reported that the accident happened on September 3 just before 11 a.m. at the intersection of East Elaine and North Knoxville Avenues. Emergency responders found one of the vehicles had rolled over twice before coming to rest on its roof.
A toxicology report is still pending as the investigation continues.
