Fatal Yonkers shooting death of Celestino Vasquez-Patricio – Obituary
Yonkers, NY — Authorities have identified the victim of an early morning shooting on Sunday as 25-year-old Celestino Vasquez-Patricio, a Yonkers resident. The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. on South Broadway, where Yonkers police officers heard a gunshot while on patrol. They arrived to find Vasquez-Patricio suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The suspect, Carlos Villanueva, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Police believe Villanueva and the victim were engaged in a dispute when Villanueva drew a firearm and shot Vasquez-Patricio. After the shooting, Vasquez-Patricio tried to seek help on the street, where officers provided medical aid. Villanueva fled the scene but was quickly apprehended nearby on Ludlow Street, where a discarded firearm was recovered.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano praised the police for their prompt action, emphasizing the importance of holding individuals accountable for violence. Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza condemned the use of weapons in disputes and stressed that justice will be pursued for this tragic incident.
