Fatal Columbus shooting death of Lamine Mahmoudi – Obituary

The Franklin County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the man who was fatally shot by Columbus police early Tuesday morning during an incident in the city’s University District.

Lamine Mahmoudi, 34, was pronounced deceased at 1:36 a.m. after being shot in an alley near his home on the 200 block of Chittenden Avenue.

Earlier in the evening, police had interacted with Mahmoudi on two separate occasions. The initial contact occurred just before 7 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a man, later identified as Mahmoudi, bleeding and brandishing a weapon inside a residence on Chittenden Avenue.

Both Columbus police and the mobile crisis response unit attempted to engage with Mahmoudi, but he chose not to communicate and the officers eventually left.

Around 10:24 p.m., authorities were called back to the same address due to reports of Mahmoudi threatening other residents with a knife. Upon arrival, they found him alone, and the mobile crisis unit made another attempt to reach him by phone, but Mahmoudi refused assistance once more. The officers then departed the scene.

The final encounter occurred around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday when police found Mahmoudi in an alley near his residence.

Authorities report that Mahmoudi approached them holding a cleaver in one hand and a butcher knife in the other, refusing to follow orders to drop the weapons. In response, the officers discharged their firearms and a Taser.

The specific number of officers involved in the shooting has not been disclosed, and it is not clear whether the final encounter was in response to a new call or if the officers came across Mahmoudi while monitoring the situation.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the incident, as per Columbus policy for police-involved shootings.
