Naveen Singh, the 52-year-old owner of Emporium Liquors in Glenwood, was shot and killed Monday night during an altercation inside his store.
Singh, a resident of Chicago Heights, was well-loved by the community, and his tragic death has left many in shock.
On Monday evening around 6:45 p.m., a gunman entered the liquor store and, following an argument, shot Singh.
According to Glenwood police, a person of interest is currently in custody, and investigators have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
Family members of Singh, devastated by the loss, locked up the store, now a crime scene. The neighborhood staple, once a friendly gathering spot, has been transformed into a site of mourning.
Customers and community members have been visiting Emporium Liquors to pay their respects.
Camille Reynolds, a local resident, described Singh as always having a kind word for those who visited. She struggled to find words to comfort his grieving family.
“My heart feels very heavy,” Reynolds shared. “I just wish I could give them a hug.”
Joann Clark, a nearby resident, recounted hearing about five gunshots that confirmed something terrible had happened.
Her neighbor, Joe Clark, saw a young man leaving the store, visibly shaken by the incident.
By Tuesday morning, a small memorial to Singh had formed outside the store, with friends and strangers alike leaving flowers and candles.
“When something like this happens, we need to come together,” said Stephanie Barnes, who helped start the memorial. “It feels like we’ve lost both a family member and a friend.”
The neighboring business owners are also feeling the impact. Darrick Green, who operates a sandwich shop a few doors down, said he is planning to improve security at his shop, a step encouraged by his father, Willie Green.
“You try to make an honest living, and someone just takes it all away,” Willie said.”I don’t want anything happening to my son, and I hate what happened to Naveen and his family.”
The investigation is ongoing, led by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.
