In Spalding County, Georgia, Sergeant Marc McIntyre of the local sheriff’s office was tragically killed on Friday while responding to a domestic disturbance.
The incident began early in the morning when McIntyre was shot in the head by Todd Lamont Harper, the suspected assailant, while he was on Deason Street. This led to an extended standoff between law enforcement and Harper.
According to the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, a woman living with Harper fled to a neighbor’s house to call 911 after a dispute. When deputies arrived at the scene, Harper fired through the window with a shotgun, striking McIntyre. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.
Law enforcement had to dismantle part of the residence to apprehend Harper, who is now in custody at the Spalding County Jail. Sheriff Darrell Dix emphasized that Harper will remain in the local jail due to the gravity of his actions. Dix also noted that this was not the first encounter with Harper, who has a history of mental health issues.
In a separate development, another deputy involved in the incident sustained a possible broken hand but was not shot.
McIntyre’s body was transported from the hospital to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Decatur, accompanied by a procession of law enforcement vehicles.
