Lauraline Gregory, David’s longtime neighbor, expressed her sorrow, recalling him as an “awesome neighbor” who was always eager to help. She emphasized David’s care, respect, and dedication to the community, noting how difficult it is to come to terms with his passing.
David, a seasoned officer with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), was accidentally shot while working on Wednesday night. He was part of MPD’s violent crime suppression team investigating a suspicious vehicle on the 4500 block of Quarles Street NE when the incident occurred.
Police reports indicate that after a suspect fled from the vehicle, ditching a gun in a storm drain, David was trying to retrieve the weapon when it discharged, fatally injuring him.
David had previously served in MPD’s Gun Recovery Unit before joining the Violent Crime Suppression Unit. His sudden death has been described as surreal, with Gregory expressing disbelief that a gun he was trying to recover would lead to his own demise.
With over 25 years of service, David was known as a dedicated officer and protector, both on duty and in his community. Gregory noted his efforts to improve and maintain their neighborhood, reflecting his commitment to making a positive difference.
