Fatal Apex shooting death of Nancy Taylor – Obituary
Two women were fatally shot in a townhome community southwest of downtown Apex on Monday afternoon. The Apex Police Department also discovered a dog that had been shot and killed in the area.
The unexpected gunfire left local residents in shock, as such incidents are uncommon in the neighborhood. “It was around 3 o’clock, and I heard between six to eight gunshots,” reported neighbor Tom McKay.
Police were alerted to a disturbance near Brussels Drive and Chipping Drive around 3 p.m., but the situation escalated to a shots-fired call by the time officers arrived. They found two women who had been shot multiple times. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to a hospital, both women succumbed to their injuries.
“This is a tragic day for our town. We grieve together as a community during such tragedies,” stated Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert. “We are grateful for the first responders who bravely came to the scene to help and ensure safety.”
Shortly after their arrival, officers heard additional gunfire, which led them to the suspect. Harry Bates Hardman, 37, of Brussels Drive, was apprehended without incident.
Hardman has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of animal cruelty, and he is now held at the Wake County Jail.
Family members have identified one of the victims as Nancy Taylor, who had recently moved to the area to be nearer to her grandchildren. She was known for her active role in the HOA and was lovingly called “grandma” by local children. Flowers were placed at her doorstep on Tuesday morning.
The other victim has been named as 36-year-old Gabrielle Raymond.
