Fatal Vernon car crash claims the life of Irl Holt – Obituary
VERNON — A beloved long-time pastor and educator, Irl Holt, 90, passed away following a two-vehicle collision near Vernon College on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred when Holt’s Buick was hit by a Dodge Charger while traveling across College Drive from Hospital Drive. Police Chief Wayne Hodges reported that the collision happened on the passenger side of Holt’s vehicle as the Dodge Charger was moving westbound on College Drive.
The force of the crash sent Holt’s car off the road, where it collided with a brick wall in a nearby field and rolled over onto its side. Emergency responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extract him from the vehicle.
The driver of the Charger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. The investigation into the accident is still ongoing, according to authorities.
Rev. Holt had retired in 2021 after serving more than 50 years as pastor of Fargo United Methodist Church. Known for his warmth and humor, he welcomed everyone into his church with open arms, leaving a lasting impression on his congregation.
Dusty R. Johnston, President of Vernon College, paid tribute to Holt, calling him “a tremendous gentleman” who was deeply committed to his family, community, and faith. Johnston added, “He was an inspiration to me personally and one of my heroes. He will be greatly missed by everyone.”
Holt was well-regarded not only as a pastor but also for his contributions to education. He served as a teacher, counselor, and principal in Vernon ISD before retiring from the school district in 1997. Over the course of his career, he made a significant impact on students and families.
Kathy McClellan, Public Information Officer for Vernon ISD, expressed her condolences on behalf of the district, stating, “Irl’s 34-year career with VISD touched countless lives. He was devoted to helping children learn and grow. His influence on this community and the school district was immense.”
Holt was recognized last year as Vernon’s retired teacher of the year for his dedication to education and the community. He also supported Vernon College as a long-time member of its board of trustees.
In a past interview, Holt spoke fondly of his experiences at Fargo United Methodist Church, recalling weddings and funerals he had conducted for multiple generations of the same families. His strong ties to the community were commemorated at his retirement ceremony, where the Mayor of Vernon declared the day “Irl Holt Day.”
Holt’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him, and his legacy of service will be remembered for years to come.
