Fatal Old Saybrook boating accident claims the life of Christopher Hallahan – Obituary
Authorities discovered the body of one of two men missing for four days after a boat carrying nine people crashed into a jetty along the Connecticut shoreline. The incident occurred near Old Saybrook, and the body was located by state environmental conservation police officers around noon on Friday, about a quarter-mile from the crash site, in the Connecticut River between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, according to Police Captain Keith Williams. The identity of the man found is being withheld until his family can be notified.
The crash also claimed the life of Christopher Hallahan of Westbrook, Connecticut, and left six others injured, all of whom were transported to the hospital for treatment. The search for the second missing man continued into Friday afternoon, with plans to resume Saturday if necessary.
The tragic accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday when authorities responded to a call and found the 31-foot motorboat partially submerged and heavily damaged near a marina in Old Saybrook, where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound. Police reported that the boat had struck a jetty at the river’s mouth, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The group had been returning from a day trip to Block Island, Rhode Island. Police stated that none of the passengers appeared to be wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.
The search efforts, which spanned multiple days, involved divers, drones, sonar equipment, and remote-operated underwater vehicles equipped with cameras, according to Captain Williams.
This accident occurred close to the site of a previous boating crash on Labor Day 2023, which resulted in four people being hospitalized. However, environmental conservation police have pushed back against claims that the area is particularly dangerous.
