David Tobias Tyler dies in fatal Linn County shooting

Fatal Linn County shooting death of David Tobias Tyler – Obituary

Early on September 14, 2024, at approximately 12:42 a.m., the Linn County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle in rural Linn County, near Scio. The injured pedestrian was treated and later released from the hospital.

 

Oregon State Police later located the suspect’s vehicle on Shimanek Bridge Drive, off Richardson Gap Road. Officers found the suspect, identified as 46-year-old David Tobias Tyler, in the driver’s seat with a firearm.

 

According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, despite numerous commands to surrender, Tyler did not comply and fired his weapon during the standoff. The Linn County Regional SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene. Attempts were made to resolve the situation peacefully via phone.

 

Ultimately, the SWAT Team engaged Tyler, resulting in him being shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement officers were harmed during the incident.

 

The Linn County Regional SWAT Team is a collaborative unit involving personnel from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Albany Police Department, and Sweet Home Police Department. The officer who fired his weapon, Sergeant Daniel Ball, is with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Sheriffs Michelle Duncan and Jef Van Arsdall have requested the Oregon State Police to conduct a detailed investigation in line with protocol for incidents involving deadly force.
