Ealwinne Richard dies in fatal Laurens County car crash following police chase
Fatal Laurens County car crash death of Ealwinne Richard – Obituary.
A police pursuit in Laurens County early Sunday morning ended tragically with the death of 30-year-old Ealwinne Richard of Clinton, South Carolina.
Laurens Police reported that officers observed a Chevrolet Spark around 1:20 a.m. displaying signs of impaired driving. When they attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver accelerated, leading officers on a high-speed chase.
According to a post on the Laurens Police Department’s Facebook page, the occupants of the vehicle were seen discarding drugs and a firearm out of the car during the chase.
South Carolina Highway Patrol stated that by 1:30 a.m., the driver, Richard, was heading south on South Harper Street Extension near Burnt Mill Creek Road when the vehicle veered off the road, struck a tree, and flipped over. Richard was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Laurens Police Chief Heath Copeland expressed his condolences, stating, “This unfortunate event highlights the risks associated with impaired driving. Our officers responded quickly to ensure public safety, and our thoughts are with those impacted. We will cooperate with state officials to ensure a thorough investigation is completed.”
