Fatal Old Hickory Lake drowning death of Clarence Claiborne – Obituary
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has identified Clarence Claiborne, a 49-year-old resident of Petersburg, Virginia, as the individual who drowned in Old Hickory Lake. The incident occurred on Thursday around 12:45 p.m. in the Spencer Creek area of the lake. Claiborne had jumped into the water to swim without wearing a lifejacket and failed to resurface. Despite efforts by passengers on a nearby pontoon boat, he could not be located.
Emergency officials recovered Claiborne’s body later that day at approximately 5:30 p.m. The TWRA has stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. This case marks the 18th boating fatality in Tennessee waters this year. Rescue operations involved multiple agencies, including Sumner County EMA, Gallatin Fire, Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Army Corps of Engineers, divers from Wilson County EMA, and Hendersonville Fire.
