A 17-year-old boy drowned in Alabama after diving into a body of water to retrieve a phone that had fallen in, according to authorities.

Emergency responders were dispatched on September 13 to Sportsman Park in Limestone County following a report of a drowning, as detailed in a Facebook update from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. The first responders later recovered the body of the victim.

The deceased was identified as 17-year-old Gustavo Ernesto Oedonez Grave from Athens, as confirmed by the Limestone County Coroner’s Office to WHNT. Deputies reported that Grave was at a dock with his family when his phone fell into the water. He jumped in to recover it but failed to resurface.

Drowning remains a significant concern, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting at least 4,000 drowning deaths annually in the U.S. Drowning is a major cause of death for children, with risks increased by factors such as lack of swimming skills, insufficient supervision, absence of life jackets, and alcohol consumption.

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance offers safety tips, including checking local weather conditions, avoiding swimming alone, and selecting appropriate equipment. They advise leaving the water if conditions become unsafe or if you experience fatigue or muscle cramps.
