William Garthaus Jr., 73, perished in a house fire that occurred early Monday morning in South Jersey. The incident took place at a residence on the 400 block of Walnut Street in Haddonfield, where authorities believe the fire was caused accidentally.
The fire broke out just after sunrise, and Garthaus was found unconscious near the front door of the home. Firefighters, who responded to emergency calls around 7 a.m. reporting smoke emerging from the roof, attempted to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the blaze started accidentally but did not provide specifics on its cause. Reports suggest that the fire may have begun in the kitchen area.
The fire also resulted in the death of a pet, and two police officers along with one medical services worker experienced smoke inhalation, though no serious injuries were reported. The Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms & Tobacco and Explosives, alongside local officials, is investigating the incident.
