The Suffolk community came together for a vigil to honor two fathers, William Goodman Jr. and Demonte Tillery, who were tragically killed in a mass shooting on East Washington Street. In addition to the two men who lost their lives, three others were injured during the incident.
Residents are in shock following the loss of these two men, both well-respected in the community. During the vigil, Justin Goodman, William’s brother, led a prayer, asking for peace and strength for Suffolk.
With candles in hand, family members and friends of Goodman and Tillery gathered to remember the two fathers. Tillery, a truck driver for Good Guy Enterprises, was known for being a devoted father. His children shared heartfelt memories, with one son recalling how, even though Tillery couldn’t be there in person, he still felt his father’s presence during his football game.
Goodman, who owned both Good Guys Enterprises and Quality Tire Shop in Suffolk, was a father of six. His family recounted how the two men were working on a truck the night they were killed. According to Goodman’s father, Demonte had just started working for William and was preparing to take his first trip on the road before tragedy struck.
When asked what he would say to the shooter, Goodman’s father expressed a desire for justice but emphasized that he did not seek retaliation. Both men leave behind large families, with Tillery survived by five children and Goodman by six.
The community continues to search for answers as police have not yet identified any suspects.
