Craig Dewberry, a 27-year-old Palm Bay resident known for his vibrant personality and community presence, was tragically killed during a robbery at the Tip Top Mini Mart in Melbourne on Tuesday. Dewberry, a social media influencer and local fixture, was fatally shot in broad daylight by one of several suspects targeting him for his jewelry.
The robbery, which occurred at noon, resulted in Dewberry being shot in the chest. Despite the presence of witnesses, the perpetrators managed to flee, abandoning the stolen jewelry in their haste. Dewberry’s father, Craig Dewberry Sr., expressed his disbelief at the senseless nature of the crime, stating, “This person shot my son and ran, then dropped his jewelry on his way out the door. It doesn’t make any sense.”
The suspect apprehended in connection with the crime, Malachi Dante Bell, a 21-year-old from Homestead, was found at a bus station in Sebastian later that day. Bell was already out on bond for a previous firearm-related charge. Authorities are still searching for additional suspects.
The shooting prompted a lockdown at nearby schools and a wave of tributes from the community. Dewberry was remembered fondly by friends and neighbors, who described him as a beloved figure who made a positive impact on those around him. The loss of Dewberry, who was known for his engaging social media content and generous nature, has left a void in the local community.
A memorial has been established outside the Tip Top Mini Mart, with candles, flowers, and personal tributes honoring Dewberry. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about violence in the area and the need for increased community support and intervention programs.
